It turns out that I was right.

(Good thing I got my advising done last week.)

The Swiss voted to ban any new construction of Minarets. Yay! Oh wait, maybe not. While I would like to see than bannination of anything having to do with Islam, it would go against my principles, and then I would just be like Iran. So, I’m afraid I disagree about this.

Speaking of Iran, World War III is creeping up like Christmas. They’ve defied the UN (which isn’t a big deal) and decided to go ahead and build 10 more uranium enrichment facilities. Time to stock up on ammo…

From what I’ve read (and they can easily be wrong), he didn’t want to be deployed to Iraq or wherever he was about to go. So he showed his disagreement by killing other soldiers, who also probably didn’t want to go.

Then, he was shot at least once. He is alive, in contrast to all the early news reports that he shot himself dead (big surprise). He killed 12 people. He was a psychiatrist, and apparently had some experience working with soldiers with PTSD.

He was also a Muslim. And now all the American-Muslim associations are coming out to “condemn” the attacks, for fear that this is going to taint the spotless Muslim-American public relation. Well, it is. See, the guy had talked about suicide bombing on the intarweb, comparing it to “jumping on the grenade” (a real grenade, not a fat chick).

Well, I’m sorry, but if they don’t want me to make the connection, they better have a better explanation than some knee-jerk “oh, but don’t blame is Muslim faith”, when so far, all the evidence points towards either his angst towards deployment, or his faith. But, I won’t go out and stone, or even give an evil eye to, Muslims now. I’ll wait till the reports are in.

And now, to the gun problem. No, the other gun problem:

“As a matter of practice, we don’t carry weapons here, this is our home,” said Cone.

Congratulations. You just let some wacko kill 12 people because of this practice. From what I can tell, the killings went on until an MP shot the suspect. A base full of qualified people, and the only one’s carrying were the bad guy and one military policeman. Congratulations.

First, let me deflect the usual arguments:

• If she/he had never been able to have a gun, this never would have happened.

Probably wrong. Her husband and her were having problems for a bit. Gun, knife, spoon, spork. Doesn’t matter. He wanted to kill her, not shoot her.

• See, you let people have guns, they they snap and kill people.

No, people don’t snap. They may surprise people when they finally follow through, but most people build up these intentions over time.

That’s all.

So, Somali pirates arrive in a couple of dinghies at a “merchant ship”, fire their Kalishnikovs in the air, and then get captured because the merchant ship was really a French warship.

And no one was hurt.

It’s almost like they scared them off. Kind of like, the pirates just want a quick buck instead of actually risking their lives. Weird.

And he fights crime.

Step 1) Insist that you teach your girlfriend gun safety before you go to shooting range.

Step 2) Load one of your firearms, and chamber a round.

Step 3) For each firearm, test to see if the safety works by placing the business end of the weapon against your head and pulling the trigger.

Step 4) If you are reading this, your gun is safe! Repeat steps 2-4 until you are dead or out of guns.

I’ll assume you’re still alive. This is good, but your girlfriend might not understand gun safety. Repeat steps 2-4 with each firearm again. This time, though, don’t check whether the safety is on or not. If you die, then it will reinforce the idea that gun safety is crucial to avoid death.

According to witnesses, Looney was demonstrating how to use the different safety mechanisms on several guns to his girlfriend. The witnesses said Looney would put the guns to his head, and before pulling the trigger, would ask her if she thought the gun would go off. With the first two guns, the safety mechanisms worked. The third gun fired.

But really, what the fuck was this guy thinking. Before you go off on how guns are inherently unsafe, let me say that the gun safety rules that 99% of all legitimate firearms owners follow were pretty much completely ignored by this “Looney” character.

Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun’s mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling.

Not only that, but he violated the basics. Never point a gun at something you don’t intend to shoot. That is, always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Regardless of whether it is loaded, unloaded, safety on, safety off, or any combination of those. Never point a gun at something that you don’t want to shoot. Ever.

So, he didn’t know what he was talking about or doing. Thankfully, he killed himself instead of his girlfriend. Un-thankfully, it’s more “ammo” for gun control advocates to use.
