My Timing Was Off

No, really. Apparently my Z31 was running about 15 extra degrees of timing, although I had checked a couple of times with my timing light when I first got Megasquirt set.

The trigger angle is now set at 75 degrees, which makes little sense to me. A (normal) V6 should reach each cylinder’s TDC at exactly 60 degrees apart. 60 times 6 equals 360.

Although, perhaps it’s accounting for less adjustment ability now. That is, my distributor was set all the way to one end to allow a full X degrees of advance. I figured, that if I pulled the distributor all the way back, it would allow more timing adjustment than if it were in the middle. With the dizzy stuck all the way back (or is it forward?), I got a trigger angle of 60 degrees. With it in the middle, the trigger angle is 75 degrees. So, perhaps now I have 15 degrees less adjustability. Hopefully, X minus 15 is still more than 40-45 degrees, so I won’t have to worry.

I never did find out what X, the maximum advance at Y distributor position was. Oh well. As much as I’d like to be able to pull 50 degrees BTDC, I suppose it’s not needed, perhaps harmful.

I’d sit down and actually think this all out more, but then that would require doing math. Voluntarily. So, no.

On the other hand, it seems to run much better. I’m surprised I didn’t hear any knock before.
